What Is Vegetarian?

Vegetarian don't take meat, poultry, fish, eggs and other animal products. Some vegetarian had also quit milk and honey.

Listed are 4 groups of vegetarian diets. Their practice are slightly different from each other.

  1. Lacto-ova-vegetarians
    The most common group of vegetarian. They don't eat fish, meat and poultry. But, they do consume dairy products and eggs.
     

  2. Lacto-vegetarians
    This vegetarian group do not eat fish, meat, eggs and poultry. But, they take diary products.
     

  3. Vegans
    The vegans rules strict them from taking meat, fish, poultry, eggs, diary products and any animal products.
     

  4. Fruitarians
    They follow the most restrictive vegetarians rules. They cannot eat any animal products, grains or vegetables.
    Their foods are fruits, nuts and seeds only.

Reasons for vegetarianism are;

  • Health reasons

  • Religious practices

  • Love for animals

  • Respect for animal rights.

Some vegetarians generally will avoid harm to animals directly or indirectly. This included those who do not use products from animal. For example: bezoars, tiger bone, bear bile, ivory, mink oil, musk, fish oil, chicken, donkey-hide gelatin, etc.

They will not engage in killing-related occupations, such as: the slaughter industry, non-vegetarian food and beverage industry, aqua culture, fishing industry.

According to Buddhist interpretation, the vegetarian fact should also avoid taking ingredients like garlic, cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, cloves, onions, and other spices.

Vegetarian Diet and Health

There are ten health benefits of practicing vegetarian diet.

1. Longevity

According to nutritionists study, vegetarians more longevity than non-vegetarians. Common centenarians, mostly are vegetarian.

2. Lighter weight

Vegetarian's weight is lighter than the meat eaters, because they are less of unnecessary fat.

3. Lower cholesterol

Vegetarian's blood cholesterol is always less than meat eaters. Too much cholesterol in the blood, will tend to cause blood vessel blockage, blood pressure and major cause to heart disease.

4. Reduce the risk of cancer

Some research indicates that meat has a fairly close relationship with many types of cancers.

5. Parasites

Worm and parasites are transmitted by infected meat and transferred to the human body.

6. Reduce kidney burden

Animals and human body waste will bring heavy burden to the kidneys.

7. Easy storage

Vegetable protein is often easier to store than animal protein.

8. Low price

Plant proteins are cheaper than meat.

9. In line with ecological principles

Land required to produce one pound of beef will produce ten pounds of vegetable protein. Many ecologists predicted that population explosion will force the world to become vegetarian.

10. Variety

Using vegetable protein will generate good aroma. With many cooking choices and methods, it will arouse good appetite.
